Asthma Breathing Treatment - Buteyko Method as an Asthma Breathing Treatment
Breathing is an essential in life. Through breathing, we continue to live and a person is declared dead in the absence of breathing. Asthma is a chronic disease wherein a person who suffers from it has breathing difficulties due to a constriction of airways in the lungs because of inflammation. And since asthma is associated with difficulty in breathing, certain breathing techniques are being done in order to alleviate asthmatic symptoms and reduce asthma attacks.
There are various asthma breathing techniques out there and one of the most effective is the Buteyko Breathing Method. It was developed by the late Konstantin Pavlovich Buteyko. According to Buteyko, asthma is due to too much carbon dioxide that a person releases, which is the reason why his or her body tries to protect him or her by constricting the air passages to limit carbon dioxide release. He said that if you are perfectly healthy, you will have 6.5% carbon dioxide in the alveoli of your lungs. This carbon dioxide amount is critical in keeping a person’s pH at safe level. pH is a chemical measure of how much acid is in our body fluids.
To help prevent the loss of carbon dioxide to a fatally low level, our body tries to protect us by constricting airways and increasing mucus production. This is the reason why wheezing and difficulty in breathing are symptoms of an asthma attack.
The basic method of Buteyko involves a full exhale, and then breathing out a little more until you feel your abdomen being drawn back against your spine. Try to stay in this exhaled state for as long as you comfortably can, then try to inhale gently without gasping or gulping. After doing that, try breathe normally for a while. When ready, do the whole process again and attempt to increase the length of time in holding an exhaled state as comfortably as you can each time.
